Our annual made up holiday.

We kick off the holidays in our family with pie. Lots of it. When Jared and I were first married we couldn't get the fam to commit to any major (or minor) holidays at our house. People had dibs. They were unbending. They threw the iron fist of holiday tradition down on our puny little heads. (Little known tidbit- Jared and I both have small heads. Phin too. Noggin is the only thing of his still lagging on the growth chart.)

So we caved. We stopped asking and started inventing. In all reality, we didn't ask very long because our very first Pie Day was only 2.5 months into our marriage.

Pie Day facts

-First pie day featured full turkey dinner. Complete with stuffed acorn squash and other appetizers. Mistake. Everyone's gut was busting before we ever made it to the pie. Now we stick with just soup and stuffed mushrooms. And a cheese box. Can't forget the ball of cheese shaped like a present.

-We make all the pies ourselves. 20+   All our patrons do is come and eat.

-We have learned over the years which pies are more flammable than other. Coconut is the clear winner.

-We forget to invite people every year. Important people we really, really love. We're total idiots when it comes to hosting.

-In our defense, it does have an official day so people should mark their calendars in advance. It's the Saturday before the Friday before Thanksgiving. Doesn't that sound better than two Saturdays before? We keep it classy and confusing.

-In the people's defense we changed it this year to accommodate a football game.

-We will never, ever, EVER do that again. Ever. We need that extra day.

People love pie day. That's what the tell us anyway. I love it because I feel guilt free blasting Christmas music once it comes around. Holidays have started around these parts.

Fire place stays unlit when kids on a sugar high are running around. Toddlers setting the house on fire ruins the holiday mood for sure.

But once the house was ours for the weekend...

Fear not. Photo illusion makes you think that felt garland closer than it is. However, sucker is coming down before we light another one.

  4. Faith – Make a pie! People are easily impressed by a pretty pie. That one in the first pic is my new favorite despite the fact that it hold no chocolate or rainbow chip frosting. That’s saying something girl. And it’s super, super easy. http://www.instyle.com/instyle/package/holidaytrends/photos/0,,20538174_20542725_21077895,00.html

Nessa – I’m a total fraud. I assigned the task of making that leaf garland to my Mom and sister 20 minutes before pie day because it didn’t feel festive enough. Pinecone owls? Michaels. I’m a craft cheater.

  5. Jennifer - Do it! You won't regret it. Unless you are opposed to gaining twelve pounds in 3 hours. That's kind of what happens.

  7. OK, this might be the best tradition I've ever heard of. And the most delicious. What beautiful pictures too!

  8. Lindsay - Nobody. Nobody needs dinner when they can have pie.

Alison - Thanks! It is a mighty delicious holiday. That's the way I like 'em.

  11. Okay, I just wrote a HUGE comment for this blog entry (seriously, it had the same word count as War and Peace)...and I don't know where it went. Maybe I shouldn't have had that third glass of wine?
So you'll have to deal with the condensed version of my previous comment (sorry). :)
My husband and I did this last year, only we had a far less creative name: Welcome to Rolex's "Pre-Thanksgiving". Lots of fun! It's great that no one has prior engagements that day since they are going other (more important) places for TG. ;)
    Happy Pie Day!
